Anyone aged 18 or above who wants to be tested for the COVID-19 virus, regardless of whether they have symptoms, can obtain a test from ResourcePath. In the United States there is a significant need for increased SARS-CoV-2 testing availability for both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals. If you would like to be tested but do not have a physician, or you do not meet illness requirements for your physician, the Commonwealth of Virginia allows patients to order their own laboratory tests for Coronavirus.  We can test individual’s younger than 18 with parental permission. 

What is the ResourcePath Coronavirus (COVID-19) test and what can it tell me?

Our test uses RT-PCR methods to detect RNA from the COVID-19 virus in your saliva or nasal swab sample. This test is performed in our high complexity, CLIA-licensed, College of American Pathologists accredited laboratory in Sterling, VA by trained professionals. 

This test can detect whether you currently have virus in your body. A negative result cannot tell you whether or not you have been exposed, have immunity, or will or will not become positive in the future. 

The typical incubation period for Coronavirus is 2-14 days. Therefore, we suggest that if you have had known or suspected exposure to someone that is infected, that you wait two days from the date of exposure to get tested.

How can I order a test for myself? 

We are partnering with McLean Pharmacy to offer SARS-CoV-2 viral testing using a non-contact process at the pharmacy.  McLean Pharmacy is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.  to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  They are located at 1392 Chain Bridge Road, Mclean, VA 22101.   Please call ahead to make an appointment. Phone: 571-488-6030 · Fax: 571-488-6035.  Testing can be performed on saliva or nasal swab. Results are available in 3-5 days.

Do you accept insurance? 

If you are seeking a test because you have symptoms or a potential exposure to someone with COVID-19, we accept Medicare, VA Medicaid, and all major private insurances with no co-pays at the Pharmacy. 

If you need a test for travel, attendance at an event, school, back to work or other screening, the cost of testing is $125 due at the time of service for 3-5 day results. Upon request, we will provide a receipt for you which you can submit with your test report and claim form for reimbursement to your insurance company.  

How am I notified of my result? 

Mclean Pharmacy is no longer calling with results.  They will provide a copy of a report if you come to the pharmacy and show your drivers license. 

We apologize for the inconvenience. ResourcePath is working hard to try to fill this gap in timely verbal notification of results.  We’re hiring! 

If you provide your email address at the time of your appointment at the pharmacy, or send it to along with your name and date of birth and date of testing, we will send you a secure email with a copy of your report upon completion.  If you are part of a family or group that were tested together, please recognize we need permission to provide results to someone other than yourself.  

What if I need a test result faster than 3-5 days? 

For individuals needing a turn around time of less than 3 days we offer an expedited (24 or 48 hour), appointment only testing service at our Sterling location between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30am.  Please see below for additional costs associated with this service.  You must make an appointment to schedule your testing. We do not accept walk-ups

The best way to reach us and initiate a test order is through email:

  • Send an email to and indicate in the subject line that you are interested in COVID testing.
  • We will send you a reply within 4 business hours with further instructions for getting tested.

If you do not have access to email, call our office at (571) 375-0755 to request information about testing. If we are unavailable, please leave a message with your name and phone number and that you are interested in COVID testing. 

For expedited service we request payment up front and will provide a receipt for you to submit to your insurance for which they may cover a portion of the testing cost. This testing is offered using the nasal swab collection only and samples must be submitted by 10:30am.

 For 24 hour results service, the cost is $500

For 48 hour results service, the cost is $250

How can my physician order a test for me? 

Have your physician contact us at or ask them to refer to our website for instructions about how to order our test. They may also call our front office at (571) 375-0755.

What if I don’t have a physician and need one to place an order?

You do not need a physician to order a test for you in Virginia.  If you would like to order your own COVID test, we will provide you with an informed consent that allows you to order the test for yourself and receive results. 

What can I expect after placing an order for a test using the direct to patient testing option? 

Once we set your appointment,  we will email you more information about what to do next. If you do not have an email address, you can request a phone call from one of our team members who will explain the test and other details by phone. 

Here is the information you can expect to receive prior to your appointment at the laboratory:

  • Consent to perform the test (if you don’t have a physician order)
  • Notice of our Privacy Practices and how we keep your information private. 
  • A brief form to fill out regarding your symptoms (if any) and information about potential exposures (if any). 
  • An invoice that can be paid by credit card.
  • Instruction sheets about how to properly perform a nasal swab test on yourself

Why use saliva? Is it as good as the nasopharyngeal tests recommended by the Centers for Disease Control?

Several studies have shown that saliva contains high viral content. Comparison of saliva and nasopharyngeal swabs have shown that both are equally diagnostic for COVID-19 virus.  Because swabs are in short supply, require an uncomfortable procedure and require the use of personal protective equipment, we designed our test to work on saliva, in addition to nasopharyngeal or mid-nasal swabs. 

What happens if I test positive?

If you test positive, and you have received a test through the direct to patient option, we will call you to notify you of the positive result at the contact number you provided. 

We are also required by law to notify your local Public Health Department about individuals who test positive for COVID-19 virus.  If your test is positive, local health departments will need to follow up with you to provide you with additional information about how to quarantine, guidelines for when you need to consider going to the Emergency Department or Hospital should your health condition worsen, an interview to determine potential contacts who need to be notified, and an assessment if you need assistance with food delivery, housing or other support that your local county can provide during your quarantine. 

Will you provide a written report? 

Yes; regardless of whether you test positive or negative, ResourcePath will provide you with a written report that you can share with your physician or whomever you wish. As noted above, you will be notified by phone of a COVID-19 positive test immediately, with the formal written report to follow in about 5 days.
